Nurses

Descriptions & Duties

  • Nurses assess patient health problems, needs and provide patient care. They are responsible for advising patients on health and disease prevention, administering medications to patients and monitoring patients for reactions or side effects, teaching patients and their families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explaining medication at home after treatment, assisting doctors during consultation with patients, operating and monitoring medical equipment, maintaining medical records, planning and participating in health education programmes, health promotion and nurse education activities.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • A pre-registration nursing programme of at least 3 years in duration, which is provided by a gazetted training school and accredited by the council.

Professional qualification

  • Must be a registered nurse with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong and hold a valid practicing certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong

Work Environment

  • Nurses work in hospitals, clinics, maternal and child health centres. They usually work in shifts and may work at night, weekends and holidays. They may have to be on call as well.
