Trade Specific Competencies

Professional knowledge and skills in maritime services

Assistant Ship Inspectors (Maritime) must always apply professional knowledge and skills in maritime services to solve issues and problems at work.

Knowledge and skills in enforcing Local Vessels Ordinance.

Assistant Ship Inspectors (Maritime) need to undertake statutory and other related duties, such as carrying out inspections and certification of vessels under the Local Vessels Ordinance.

General Requirements

Professional qualification

  • Machinery Discipline requirements: (a) have a Diploma or Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering, or equivalent; (b) acquire three years' relevant post-qualification experience; or (a) process a Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer) Class 2 (Steam or Motor), or equivalent; and (b) one year relevant post-qualification experience. Hull and Deck Discipline requirements: (a) have a Diploma or Higher Certificate in Naval Architecture, or equivalent; and (b) attain three years' relevant post-qualification experience. Electrical Discipline requirements: (a) have a Diploma or Higher Certificate in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent; and (b) attain three years' relevant post-qualification experience

Other specific requirements

  • Must attain language proficiency requirements of Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent
