Trade Specific Competencies

Knowledge & skills in gemstones

Gemmologists must apply the good knolwedge and skills to analyse and evaluate gemstones through the application of test equipmnet such as microscopes and spectroscopes. They also assist with appraisals and valuations of gems.

Detail oriented

Gemmologists should have detailed mind to accurately examine and identify gemstone materials using standard, high tech, and specialty gemstone testing equipment.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • a relevant recognised diploma or foundation certificate, or equivalent

Professional qualification

  • should obtain Fellowship/ Graduate membership/ status in either one of the following associations/ institutions: Gemmological Institutes in China (GIC)/ American Gem Society (AGS)/ Canadian Institute of Gemmology (CIG)/ Canadian Gemmological Association (CGA)/ Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A)/ Gemological Institute of America (GIA)/ Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF)/ International School of Gemmology / International Gem Society (IGS) or other equivalent associations or institutions

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience
