Descriptions & Duties

  • Medical Doctors diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases and injuries commonly occurred in patients. Medical doctors examine patients; review medical history; prescribe medications; arrange and perform diagnostic tests, explain treatment plan and discuss treatment procedures and results with patients, record patients' medical information and history. They refer patients to specialists for further diagnosis or treatment when necessary.

Trade Specific Competencies

Medical knowledge and skills

Medical Doctors must apply the knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities.

Therapy & counselling knowledge and skills

Medical Doctors must apply the knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for counselling and guidance.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • A recognised bachelor's degree in medicine and a bachelor's degree in surgery (MBBS at HKU or MB ChB at CUHK) or passed the Licensing Examination of the Medical Council of Hong Kong. Completion of a period of pre-registration internship training and assessment in approved hospitals or institutions.

Professional qualification

  • A medical qualification registrable in Hong Kong under the Medical Registration Ordinance. Holder of valid practicing certificate issued by the Medical Council of Hong Kong

Work Environment

  • Medical Doctors work long, irregular, and overnight hours. They may travel between their offices and hospitals to take care of their patients. While on call, medical doctors may need to address patients' concerns over the phone or make emergency visits to hospital.
