Descriptions & Duties

  • Official Languages Officers are mainly deployed in bureaux and department to perform translation and interpretation duties like translating Chinese into English, and vice versa, interpreting in English/ Cantonese/ Putonghua at boards, committees, meetings and interviews and attending meetings for the purpose of producing minutes in Chinese and English. They also provide language-related support services such as drafting and vetting documents in Chinese and English, and advising on the use of the two official languages.

Knowledge and ability of language translation

Official Languages Officers must have good knowledge and ability of language translation, such as English to Chinese and vice versa, etc. They must also be sensitive to cultural differences and expectations. Successful interpreting and translating must have a good understanding of people's cultures.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • A bachelor's degree, or equivalent

Other specific requirements

  • Level 2 in English & Chinese in Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) and pass an Aptitude Test
