Jewellery Designers

Descriptions & Duties

  • Jewellery Designers create the concept for a new piece of jewellery taking into account materials and manufacture processes, cost and customers’ requirements. They may draw their designs on paper or use a computer-aided design (CAD) tool to create it. They often generate a few prototypes and oversee the production of their designs.

Jewellery Designers must be able to sketch their initial design ideas and create prototypes.

Knowledge in gemstones, precious metals and other commonly-used materials for jewellery products

Jewellery Designers must be familiar with the characteristics of commonly-used materials for jewellery products so that they can choose suitable materials for their designs.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • Normally have a higher diploma or a bachelor's degree in jewellery design

Professional qualification

  • Holding full membership of the Hong Kong Designers Association is preferable

Experience

  • At least 1 – 2 years’ design experience

Related Education & Training

Work Environment

  • Jewellery Designers work primarily in offices and some self-employed Jewellery Designers may work at homes. They may need to travel to factories where their products are manufactured and meet with their clients in different venues.
