Descriptions & Duties

  • Athletes compete in athletic or sports events. They train, compete, either individually or as part of a team in their chosen sport.
    They are responsible for participating in athletic or sports events, competing according to established rules and regulations; participating in regular practice and training sessions under the supervision of athletic trainers or professional coaches to maintain the required standard of fitness and skills to prepare for competitions;
    maintaining equipment used in a particular sport in good condition;
    participating in sports promotional activities and media interviews;
    deciding on strategies and tactics of competitive sporting events in consultation with coaches; assessing performance of other competitors and conditions at venues; obeying the rules of the sport during competitions and games; assessing performance after each athletic or sports event, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and making adjustments to improve future performance.

  • must have superior athletic talent; have extensive knowledge of their sport, especially its rules, regulations, and strategies.

Work Environment

  • Athletes often work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. They may be exposed to all weather conditions during the season in which they play their sport. They may travel to sporting events in other countries.
