Correctional Officers

Descriptions & Duties

  • Correctional Officers are mainly deployed to supervise junior staff, persons under custody, young persons in a training/ rehabilitation centre and drug dependants in a drug addiction treatment centre. They supervise and coordinate working schedule of other correctional service officers and assistant officers, and enforce rules and keeping order within prisons or institutions work in a prison hospital or in the Rehabilitation Unit; or undertake specific catering duties in penal institutions. They are subject to the provisions of the Prisons Ordinance.

Trade Specific Competencies

Knowledge and skills in managing custodial environment

Correctional Officers maintain a safe and secure custodial environment and help the person in custody regenerate and rejoin the community. They have to keep calm when confronting with hostile situations and dealing with emergency situations.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • A bachelor's degree; or diploma/ higher diploma/ associate degree, or certificate of Registration (Pt II) by Nursing Council of Hong Kong (NCHK); or attained Level 3 in 5 Subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE); or have a diploma in social work; Cert of Reg (Pt I) by NCHK; or attained Level 3 in 4 Subjects in HKDSEE

Other specific requirements

  • Level 1 in English & Chinese in Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) or Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in HKDSEE; pass a Physical Fitness Test; speak fluent Cantonese and English
