Immigration Officers

Descriptions & Duties

  • Immigration Officers are mainly deployed on general, executive and supervisory duties in connection with the enforcement of the immigration, registration of persons, births, deaths and marriage laws of Hong Kong. They monitor the checking of travel documents of persons crossing national borders to ensure that they have the necessary authorisations and visas and detain persons found to be in violation of immigration laws.

Trade Specific Competencies

Skills in enforcing effective immigration control

Immigration Officers must be able to lead a team to provide efficient services. They may need to identify the person to be detained at the control point with high passenger traffic and limited time. They may also need to explain the immigration policy and procedures to visitors.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • A bachelor's degree; or a diploma/ higher diploma/ associate degree; or attained Level 3 or above in five subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE)

Other specific requirements

  • Level 1 in English & Chinese in Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) or Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in HKDSEE; pass a Physical Fitness Test; speak fluent Cantonese and English

Related Education & Training

Work Environment

  • Immigration Officers are required to wear uniform, and to carry out work shifts. They may also be required to work in an area outside the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
