Customs & Excise Inspectors

Descriptions & Duties

  • Customs & Excise Inspectors are mainly deployed on leading and participating in law enforcement activities relating to import and export of goods, revenue protection and collection, anti-narcotics, anti-smuggling and intellectual property rights protection. They assist the Senior Inspector in staff management and office administration, and supervise the work performed by members under his/ her charge. They are subject to discipline under the Customs and Excise Service Ordinance.

Trade Specific Competencies

Customs and excise law-enforcement supervision ability

Customs & Excise Inspectors must suppress smuggling and interdict narcotics. They may conduct checks on passengers, cargoes, postal parcels and conveyances or need to answer the visitors' enquiries on import and export declarations. They may identify the problem and provide support and solution to their colleagues.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • A bachelor's degree; or a diploma/ higher diploma/ associate degree; or attained Level 3 or above in five subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE)

Other specific requirements

  • Level 1 in English & Chinese in Common Recruitment Examination (CRE); pass an Eyesight Test; pass a Physical Fitness Test; speak fluent Cantonese and English; permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

Work Environment

  • Customs & Excise Inspectors are required to wear uniform, carry firearms, work irregular hours and work in an area outside the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as required.
