Descriptions & Duties

  • Conducts nutritional diagnosis and designs personalised meal plans. Provides dietetic counselling including medical nutrition therapies (for those with chronic diseases, overweight/ obesity problems and nutrition imbalance). Gives recommendations on nutritional supplements to individuals. Monitors individuals’ dietary progress and collaborates with healthcare professional teams to manage medical conditions through specialised diets. Conducts research and promotes public health and education.

Trade Specific Competencies

Knowledge and Skills in Nutritional Assessment and Dietary Counselling

Dietitians must possess professional knowledge and skills in nutritional assessment, dietary counselling, and medical nutrition therapy. They provide personalised dietary advice and counselling tailored to clients’ health conditions and nutritional needs, develop appropriate nutrition care plans to support health and treatment goals, and, where necessary, recommend suitable nutritional supplements.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics or a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics, inclusive of an internship

Professional qualification

  • Must obtain at least one of the following professional qualifications:

    Registered Dietitian, Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, or

    Registered Dietitian, Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), or

    Registered Dietitian, Provincial Registration, Dietitians of Canada (DC), or

    Accredited Practising Dietitians, Dietitians Australia (DA), or

    A person who is a member of Hong Kong Academy of Accredited Dietitians

Related Education & Training

Work Environment

  • Dietitians are primarily employed by the Hospital Authority, but they may also work in the Department of Health, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), residential care homes for the elderly, private hospitals and other healthcare organisations, sports organisations, catering companies, food and nutrition companies, and tertiary institutions. Some dietitians choose to work in private practice, providing nutrition counselling and related services to individuals and groups.
