Firemen

Descriptions & Duties

  • Firemen are mainly deployed on carrying out operational/ marine duties, for example, fire-fighting and rescuing work, and take part in fire protection duties. They are subject to discipline, and are required to work shifts and wear uniform.
    They are responsible for driving fire trucks;
    fighting fires using water hoses, water pumps and fire extinguishers etc.;
    using special equipment to clear up hazardous materials;
    rescuing people in burning buildings or other emergency situations;
    preventing the spread of dangerous substances in case of fires or accidents;
    using tools to break through debris;
    educating the public on fire prevention;
    performing equipment maintenance;
    participating in physical training activities;
    participating in fire drills.

Trade Specific Competencies

Firefighting knowledge and skills

Firemen must understand the theory of combustion, the principles of fire fighting and the skills of various fire extinguishing tools, so as to effectively extinguish fires.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • Attained Level 2 in 5 subjects (including English and Chinese) at DSE

Other specific requirements

  • Passed the Eyesight, Fitness & Aptitude Tests.

Work Environment

  • Firemen work 24-hour shifts on duty, and are off in the following 48 or 72 hours. They remain on call at fire station. They perform physically demanding tasks. They often encounter dangerous situations. They must wear protective gear.
