Descriptions & Duties

  • Marine Officers (Maritime) discharge the statutory functions relating to navigational matters in the waters of Hong Kong. They control and regulate ports, shipping and local craft, public cargo working areas and ferry terminal and co-ordinate search and rescue operations in the region.

Marine Officers (Maritime) must always apply professional knowledge and skills in maritime services to solve issues and problems at work.

Knowledge and skills in managing Government fleet operations

Marine Officers (Maritime) must be able to manage Government fleet operations and district marine offices.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline relating to the maritime field from a university in Hong Kong or equivalent, acceptable to the Director of Marine

Professional qualification

  • A Certificate of Competency (Deck Officer) Class 1 (Master Mariner) issued by the Hong Kong Marine Department or equivalent

Other specific requirements

  • Required one year's experience as Chief Officer or above on a sea-going ship; required to achieve Language proficiency requirements of Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent
