  • Shipping Safety Officers (Maritime) are mainly responsible for safety issues on vessels. They implement statutory requirements and codes of safe working practice relating to marine industrial works within the waters of Hong Kong.

Shipping Safety Officers (Maritime) must always apply professional knowledge and skills in maritime services to solve issues and problems at work.

Knowledge and skills in enforcing statutory requirements relating to marine industrial works

Shipping Safety Officers (Maritime) must be able to investigate and process prosecution on violations of statutory requirements relating to marine industrial works within the waters of Hong Kong.

General Requirements

Professional qualification

  • (i) must have a Class 1 Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer) of a foreign-going steamship and/ or motor ship acceptable to the Director of Marine; or (ii) holding a recognised corporate membership of a relevant engineer institution acceptable to the Director of Marine

Other specific requirements

  • achieve language proficiency requirements of 'Level 1' results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the Common Recruitment Examination, or equivalent
