  • Surveyors of Ships (Maritime) undertake statutory and other related duties under the Merchant Shipping Ordinances pertaining to maritime safety, pollution prevention, security, seafarers' welfare and management including casualty investigations and audits of Hong Kong registered ships and their companies.

Surveyors of Ships (Maritime) must always apply professional knowledge and skills in maritime services to solve issues and problems at work.

Knowledge and skills in enforcing Boiler and Pressure Vessels Ordinance

Engineer and Ship Stream: Surveyors of Ships (Maritime) need to undertake statutory and other related duties under the Boiler and Pressure Vessels Ordinance.

Knowledge and skills in construction of new vessels and maintenance of the Government Fleet

Ship Stream: Surveyors of Ships (Maritime) need to undertake duties as a naval architect for the Government on the construction of new vessels and maintenance of the Government Fleet.

General Requirements

Professional qualification

  • General requirements for the different streams: (A) Engineer and Ship Stream (i) have a degree in engineering or technology relevant to the work of the surveyor of ships; or a recognised corporate membership of an engineer institution by examination; or (ii) process a Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer) Class 1; or (iii) have a degree in Mechanical/ Marine Engineering or equivalent; a corporate membership of an engineer institution acceptable to the Director of Marine; and a Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer) Class 2 issued by or acceptable to the Director of Marine; and (iv) For candidates having qualifications as stipulated in (A) (i) and (ii) above, two years' experience at the rank of 2nd engineer or above on sea-going ships or at equivalent responsible levels in a maritime engineering related industry; or for candidates having qualifications as stipulated in (A) (iii) above, four years' experience at the rank of 2nd engineer or above on sea-going ships or at equivalent responsible levels in the marine engineering related industry. (B) Nautical Stream (i) process an Extra Master's Certificate of Competency acceptable to the Director of Marine; or (ii) have a degree in Nautical Studies or a related subject acceptable to the Director of Marine; and a Certificate of Competency (Deck Officer) Class 1 (Master Mariner) issued by or acceptable to the Director of Marine; and (iii) acquire two years' experience at the rank of Chief Officer or above on sea-going ships or at equivalent responsible levels in the nautical related industry. (C) Ship Stream (i) have a degree in naval architecture or a related technology acceptable to the Director of Marine; (ii) hold a recognised corporate membership in a naval architect institution acceptable to the Director of Marine; (iii) acquire four years relevant experience after obtaining corporate membership.

Other specific requirements

  • Must attain language proficiency requirements of Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent
