  • Primary School Teachers prepare younger students for further education by teaching them a range of basic subjects at primary school level. They are also responsible for organising activities designed to promote physical, mental, and social development, such as games, arts and crafts, music, and storytelling.

Primary School Teachers must be able to apply the education theory and teaching skills in nurturing primary school students for betterment of academic and whole person development.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • generally hold a certificate/ higher diploma in education for primary school teachers or a bachelor's degree of education from the Education University of Hong Kong (formerly known as Hong Kong Institute of Education), or hold a bachelor's degree in any subjects from a Hong Kong university, or equivalent

Professional qualification

  • must be registered under the Education Ordinance as either a registered teacher or a permitted teacher

Other specific requirements

  • normally have a post-graduate Diploma in Education, or equivalent; usually need to undergo a period of fieldwork, commonly referred to as student teaching. During student teaching, they work with a mentor teacher and gain experience teaching students in a classroom setting.

Work Environment

  • Primary School Teachers generally work during school hours. They often spend time in the evenings and at weekends grading papers and preparing lessons. They may meet with parents, students, and other teachers before and after school.
