Trade Specific Competencies

Troubleshooting knowledge and skills

Telecommunications Technicians troubleshoot and work out solutions for the problems when telecommunications equipment malfunctions.

Customer service skills

Telecommunications Technicians serve customers at their homes and offices, and are required to explain their work to people who have little or no technical knowledge. Therefore, friendliness and politeness are important skills for them.

Colour vision

Telecommunications Technicians must be able to distinguish different colours because the wires used for telecommunications are colour-coded.

Mechanical skills

Telecommunications Technicians are required to install and repair devices. They must have good mechanical skills, be familiar with the internal parts of the devices, the appropriate tools for installation and repair, and understand manufacturer's instructions for their tasks.

General Requirements

Academic qualification

  • A certificate in electronics, telecommunications, or computer technology

Professional qualification

  • With knowledge of TCP/IP, LAN, WAN, switches & router configuration are preferable

Experience

  • At least 1 year's experience in telecommunications, information systems, or computer work
